Air abrasion is minimally invasive technology used to treat small cavities that can eliminate the need for an anethetic injection and the dental drill.
Air abrasion is one of the newest innovations in dentistry and also on the most conservative! It is rapidly developing a reputation as the procedure of choice for removing small to medium size cavities.
Small cavities are identified and scheduled for conservative composite tooth colored restorations.
During air abrasion, an instrument that works like a mini sandblaster is used to spray away decay. During air abrasion, a fine stream of particles is aimed at the decayed portion of the tooth. These particles are made of silica aluminum oxide and are propelled toward the tooth surface by compressed air that runs through the dental handpiece. The small particles of decay on the tooth surface are removed as the stream of particles strikes them. The particles of decay are then "suctioned" away.
The prepared tooth is treated with an acid solution to roughen the surface and get it ready for the bonding process. Once “etched”, the tooth is ready for bonding agents and the conservative filling. We use special lights to harden the filling and then complete the process by polishing the filling.
The surface is sealed and protected leaving the tooth restored to its original strength and beauty.
Micro-dentistry is an excellent preventative treatment for those who share our belief that early, conservative care is ideal. You can have decay removed without a shot, loud noise, or bad smells. If you have any questions, just ask us about this new and exciting technology.
