Tis the season! This time of year is full of gatherings, gift giving, delicious meals, sweet treats and…

Gum disease and tooth decay?

Oral health has its challenges during the festive season. According to a DentalVox survey, 36% of patients think the holidays have a negative effect on oral hygiene and 25% of respondents skip or neglect hygiene routines during the holidays.

It doesn’t have to be this way! By following these few simple tips, you can celebrate, stay healthy and keep your smile shining bright during the holiday season:

  • Buy a new toothbrush. When’s the last time you updated your toothbrush? Now is the great time to get a new brush that is fresh and effective! Be sure to brush at least twice a day, after every meal if you can, to remove food debris and keep bacteria from growing on your teeth.
    • BONUS TIP: Hum a carol while you brush your teeth! You should brush your teeth for at least two minutes, which a round or two of “Jingle Bells” should cover.
  • Limit sugary and alcoholic beverages. The combination of sugary content and high acidity in many popular drinks can wreak havoc on your teeth and gums. Try to cut down on the glasses of your favorite drinks, and have a glass of water in between, to keep your smile (and liver!) at their best.
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools. Your teeth can chip, crack or break from trying to open bottles or rip off tags. Avoid the pain and expensive dental treatments, and use scissors, bottle openers and other proper tools.
  • Include healthy snacks and treats in your menu line-up. There’s nothing wrong with your favorite Christmas cookie or special treat! Just be sure to add some vegetables, fruits and other options to add some nutrients for a healthier smile and body. Crispy fruits and veggies can clean your teeth and massage your gums, while cheese is known to help neutralize acidic levels and lessening the plaque on your teeth!
  • Schedule your next cleaning. Scheduling an appointment for before or after Christmas is a great way to clean your mouth, check for any potential problems and ensure your oral health is in great shape for 2022.
